How to Buy a Car Under 500 Dollars
February 28, 2010
For some buying a car for less than $1000 dollars just is not enough. We want a lot more, but we want to pay a lot less. This leads some to pursue getting a vehicle for under 500 dollars. The reasons can be many low budget, 24hrs of Lemons race, parts car, etc. but I feel that there are a few extra points to be made and things to look out for if anybody is looking to find a car under 500.
Here is a quick guide to finding a truck or car under 500 dollars.
Step 1. Check the title. This may or may not be important to some depending on what your plans for the vehicle are, but when ever buying a vehicle this cheap its important to ask about the title or see if it even has one. Last thing you want is a headache with trying to register the vehicle if you plan on acutally driving it on the streets some day.
Step 2. Negotiate. In order to get a vehicle under 500 dollars, its customary that a little wheeling and dealing be used. Now this doesn’t mean go out there and low ball every ad you see in the hopes that somebody is going to drop to a sub-500 dollar level, but make your case and make it clear what you are willing to pay and why, because when we are talking prices this low every little bit helps.
Step 3. Expect the worst. Now not every vehicle under 500 dollars is going to be an absolute dog, but lets face it we are getting into the super low scrap pricing territory so finding a perfectly good running vehicle is not terribly difficult, but its not always going to be the case. Keep in mind what you need the vehicle for and factor this into your pricing/offer.
Step 4. Get it out of there. One of the easiest ways to buy a car for under 500 dollars is to simply offer to haul it away. Non-running cars and trucks tend to not make great lawn decorations (regardless of what I think) and most sellers who would be willing to part with $500 or less simply just want the thing gone. I’m sure you have your trailer with you (or at least called a tow truck) so offer them some cash and say I’ll take it away today and you might be quite surprised at how willing they will be to let the vehicle go just for the sake of it being gone.
Best of luck finding your next car under 500!
