Keywords in Tags Are No Longer Very Important
May 17, 2009
Most website owners are by now fairly well educated when it comes to the significance of keyword meta data and the role this plays in the use of Search Engine Optimization, (SEO) and how Search Engines themselves make use of Meta Data to rank websites.
However it is amazing that there are Millions of people still thinking that keywords alone have the power to promote a website to the top of Search Engines.
It is even more amazing that so many web designers and web design companies are still pursuing their SEO work by using Keyword Tags and Keywords in totally the wrong way. Google has stopped years ago paying a great deal of attention to Keyword relevance.
We come across many sites, even sites designed by Web Design Companies who have stuffed their client’s sites as well as their own full of keywords and are wondering why their web sites fail to appear on page 1 of Search Engines.
The reason why Keywords are no longer as powerful as they once have been in the very early days of Search Engines (before Google even existed) is the fact, that once upon a time there have been far fewer websites around, and it was relative easy for Search Engines to find the sites which they believed offered the most relevant content in relation to the Search Terms used.
In today’s world where there are Millions of similar sites all using the same or similar Keywords within their Keyword Meta Tags, it would be impossible to return accurate and quality Search Results if Search Engines would try to find the best site which contains the most accurate content the user is looking for, simply based on the Keywords the websites display within their Meta Data.
Having lots of Keywords does not mean a website has quality content and offers the internet user what he or she is looking for. In fact using keywords to excess will have the opposite effect. Search Engines will downgrade the site and it will slide down the ranking order very quickly.
It is exactly this point which led Search Engines including Google and Yahoo to rethink their way by which they index web pages. The shift from Keywords to Content began years ago, and today content is the most important area of SEO and is responsible to a large degree for the success of a website in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPS)
It is easy to manipulate keyword meta data, it is not so easy to manipulate valid content. Content is King.
Most websites have insufficient content both in terms of quality and quantity. We cannot stress enough how important it is to not only to have good quality and unique content but also to frequently change the content. Changing content will keep the website fresh and appealing to search engines.
If Search Engines stop visiting websites, or the frequency between visits is becoming longer, than this is beginning of the end for many sites in terms of their ranking positions.
