Most young drivers pay a ton for their auto insurance coverage. Don’t be one of them! There are a few “secrets” to getting cheap car insurance for teenagers. Know them, and you’ll end up saving hundreds of dollars each year on insurance payments.

1. Drive a “safe” car. Most auto insurance companies offer special price discounts when you are insuring vehicles that have protective devices such as automatic seat belts, dual airbags, and anit-lock braking systems. Typically, your info is matched against a database, and the savings are added on automatically. If they’re not, be sure to mention it to your insurance company.

2. Get good grades. In an effort to reward young drivers who they see as less risky, many car insurance companies now have “good student” programs that give premium discount for high school and college students who maintain at least a B average. This can lower the monthly insurance payments by 5-10%.

3. Make a lump sum payment. Just about every car insurance company will give you an instant price savings if you pay for you policy in one lump sum, as opposed to paying for it in monthly installments. If you can discipline yourself to save up and make this one payment, you’ll generally see about a 10-15% policy discount.
