The Important Information to Gather Following a Car Accident

August 26, 2009

Most Americans depend on personal vehicles for transportation to work, school, and social obligations on a daily basis. Because of the frequency of use and the sheer number of vehicles on the road, auto accidents are very common, often ranging from minor fender-benders to serious accidents involving medical emergencies and serious property damage.

If a serious accident occurs, medical attention should be sought immediately. Injured parties should be attended to immediately and should be taken to the hospital for proper care and treatment. Law enforcement officers should be called to the scene to assist with the redirection of traffic and to record the incident.

In many cases, accidents occur but no one is seriously injured. Oftentimes, the vehicles may suffer serious damage, but the drivers and passengers may be free from injury. In such cases, the drivers should follow simple steps to make sure the incident is resolved properly and their insurance claims can be effectively resolved.

Following an accident, vehicles should be removed from the roadway if possible. This may not be feasible if the vehicles are disabled or damaged to the point of being inoperable. In such cases, law enforcement officers should be contacted so the scene can be secured and proper traffic flow can be redirected.
